The world's first light vessel dropped anchor in 1732 on the Nore, a treacherous North Sea sandbank. Named the Nore and lying between the coasts of Kent and Essex, it has tradionally marked the point where the Thames and North Sea meet. The last manned lightship in service was LV18, off Cromer, which was decommissioned in 1993 and is now permanently berthed in Harwich, home of Trinity House, as a museum to pirate radios. Its story can be read here.
