This is an engraving of Chelsea by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, a man with an impressive Movember 'tache and a name impossible to shorten. The American artist spent most of his life in Chelsea. His home and studio was in Lindsey Row, later named Cheyne Walk, by Greaves boatyard. In the picture is the Adam and Eve pub and Chelsea Old Church. The view from his studio encompassed a broad sweep of the Thames, and in the distance he could see the Crystal Palace, which features as a smudge on the skyline in some of his works.
An American in London: Whistler and the Thames is the title of an exhibition of the artist's paintings, prints and drawings, including his Nocturnes, showing at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, until January 12.
