Tall ships at the Totally Thames festival, seen here at Woolwich heading up past the Thames Barrier to Greenwich, gave passengers a glimpse of life before the mast, at £50 or so a round-trip. A good place to see them was on board the Woolwich Ferry, the unsung hero of London transport, which provides seamless free crossings for passengers and vehicles between Tower Bridge and Dartford.
