East India Docks

An excellent walk around the East India Docks today, led by Dr Georgie Wymyss of the University of East London and part of Brick Lane Circle's Bengal History Week.

Afterwards, I looked back across the river from the O2 to make sense of it, and saw its waterfront stretching around 500 yards or more, from Blackwall Yard (briefly owned by the East India Company, where ships continued to be built) to the docks' entrance basin.

In between today is Virginia Quay, with the memorial, re-sited, of the spot where the first settlers in America set off for Virginia, six years after the first East India Company fleet embarked for the East.
