Give us your huddled masses...

Waverley, the world's last steam-powered sea-going paddle steamer, was yesterday diverted from Clacton to Southend. An exceptionally high tide meant that she could not berth at Clacton pier, so she was diverted. The hundreds of passengers waiting for her at Clacton, many from various parts of the country, were taken by coach to Southend. Alas, the railway on the world's longest pier wasn't working, so the passengers, many of them elderly, had to walk 1.34 miles along the pier's creaky boards on a blustery afternoon to reach the steamer to take them on to London.
