Festival in Leigh, last of the Thames fishing ports
At Leigh Maritime Festival in Essex today Father Clive Hillman of the local Anglo-Catholic St Clement's church blessed the catch, the fishermen and the sea. Unfortunately, tide and weather conditions prevented the blessing of an actual catch, but it was good enough. The Festival was an excellent day out, with shanties, a-cappella groups, bands, a regatta, stalls, local societies, plus a pink fluffy pig race. Seafood from Osborne's and the Peterboat was de rigeur in this cockling town, and there was information about Leigh, with a new initiative, North Thames Fisheries Action Group, trying to halt the decline of fishing in this, the last of the Thames fishing ports.
