High prices threatening eel and pie shops


It's hard to know what to make of the eel situation. Manze's in Peckham has posted a note on its door saying the price of eels is putting up the price of their meals, and there is general complaint from eel and pie shops about eel prices. Yet the Thames river authorities are saying eel stocks are coming back. It's unlikely we'll see the return of the river fishermen, whose gear is on display alongside F. Cooke's Dalston eel and pie shop, partially re-erected in Hackney Museum after "The Buckingham Palace of Eel and Pie Shops" closed in 1997. Let's hope the other shops don't follow suit.
