Take a walk before Paramount theme park arrives

Swanscombe peninsula, between St Clements Reach and Northfleet Hope, is a wild Thameside walk, but it won't be for long, following the announcement of a £2billlion Paramount theme park.

A two-and-a-half walk around the Swanscombe peninsula is one of the most pleasant journeys along the Thames. Start at Greenhithe, the one-time small community beneath chalk cliffs, with views towards Dartford's Queen Elizabeth II bridge. Take the lower promenade east beneath modern housing to Swanscombe Marshes, and follow the riverbank as it heads north up Broadness Salt Marsh where, near its tip, is a delightful creek of decaying boats (above). Keep following the coast around the point as it heads south again, with the yachts moored off Grays on the opposite bank, until Tilbury and the docks come in sight. Then head inland up the road to clifftop Swanscombe, crossing over the Eurostar line that surfaces from its Thames tunnel here.
Swansombe is a one-chippy town, a few shops in a bleak high street, but no doubt it will start to look more prosperous when the theme park arrives
