Container giant at London Gateway

Edith Maersk, the largest ship ever to have come up the Thames, arrived at London Gateway on October  19. Built by Odense Steel Shipyard in 2007, she is a touch under 400 metres, the length of an Olympic track event, and can carry13,500 containers. Turn around time was a matter of hours before she set off for Singapore, and she can be tracked here.

Maersk has more than 500 vessels and boasts that a full cargo on one of its ships could carry 528 million bananas -- enough for every single person for breakfast in either Europe or North America. This time, however, the cargo was textiles from the far east, to where she was returning.
